Integrated Catchment Management

Picture
Watershed - An area or region drained by a river, river system, or other body of water - commonly referred to as a catchment

Integrated Catchment Management

Picture
Integrated Catchment Management is an approach based on an understanding that social, ecological and economic  systems are interconnected within a watershed.

Catchment management involves planning, managing and conserving the natural and cultural values within a catchment area while fostering sustainable growth in the socio-economic systems that drive production.

Brian can bring a multidisciplinary approach to address catchment management  issues.

H
aving worked as a catchment coordinator, principal catchment ecologist and as a director overseeing the development and evaluation of multi million dollar catchment management programs he is equally comfortable in  in the field with landowners and extension officers as he is at forums with senior executives.

Community Engagement & Facilitation
Watershed can provide advanced skills in facilitation and community engagement. We use real-time interactive polling and assessment technology (Keepad Interactive and Turning Point Software).

Training

Waterway Rehabilitation

Restoring the health and aquatic biodiversity of waterways and wetlands is a critical component of catchment management.  Watershed can assist clients with :

  • riparian and floodplain assessment
  • aquatic ecology and fluvial geomorphology analysis
  • wetland condition and buffer evaluation
  • assessment of fish passage and that required for other fauna
  • practical waterway and wetland rehabilitation advice
  • strategic ecological restoration planning

Climate Action

Increasingly catchment management is being conducted in an era where global impacts are resulting in local climate variability.  Not only are we getting more days of extreme heat and less cool nights which affect crop suitability and performance, but also a steady decline in streamflow affecting potable and irrigation water supplies, with significantly increased bushfire hazard impacting the productivity of forests all of which place enormous pressure on the ecosystem services we have come to enjoy.

Brian has been involved in responding to climate change since 1990 and can provide professional advice to organisations wishing to  adopt a:
  • precautionary approach to climate change adaptation;
  • accelerate their transition to net zero emissions;
  • pursue actions that have multiple benefits, including reducing emissions in a manner that results in financial, environmental, health and/or social rewards; and
  • prioritise actions based on risk management and their ability to affect change and achieve the desired impact.

Drone Imagery
Brian has also obtained a commercial Remote Pilot Licence (ARN 1095916) and can augment site inspections with drone surveillance and imagery and can develop case study videos and the like.
